Many of us would much prefer our pets to “die peacefully in their sleep” rather than us have to make the decision to put them to sleep with the vet.
Unfortunately, it is rare that anyone – animal or human – dies “peacefully” in their sleep. Fundamentally, animals are no different to humans in terms of how they die. Unless a death is caused by a sudden heart attack or an accident, it usually involves some form of suffering towards the end.
It is important to remember that, because your pet isn’t screaming in pain, this does not mean they are not suffering. Euthanasia is the most loving and kind thing we can do for our pets – we have the ability to stop their suffering by choosing timely euthanasia and we should not choose the alternative.
